Combined UG Expedition Trip Part II

By Imroatu

Here's my reflection on the Sarawak trip. I really enjoyed our trip as I tried the "TARZAN thingy". Although I'm afraid, I pushed myself up to try it. I like the part where we needed to do the obstacle ropes. This part made us to learn how to build teamwork as doing it as a group was easier. The only one which I did not try was the high ropes. I would rather choose the type we have in Singapore rather than this. In Singapore, there would be a belayer which helped to control your movements better. I didn't thought that I had reached to the SUMMIT!! At last!! Throughout this trekking trip, I helped all my friends to push themselves up although it was so tiring. It was quite fun actually. When it's time for us to come down from the summit, I had a lot of fun jumping, sliding down and climbing down from the ropes. That's al i could share

This expedition has made me realise what I'm capable of and what I'm not. It helped me in many ways like pushing my limits further, overcoming an obstacles with courage and increase my motivation! I also learnt that my strength is courage . I didn't really notice that I had it all along but i was scared to let people know that; I didn't really know why until the day that we had to do high element course. I can easily recall it because it was funny at first it was like bravado and all but as soon as I went to the third element , *poof !* all hope was gone. I was standing there, unmoving as if a monkey was looking at me. Ms Bong was shouting "You can do this Surya!! You step on it on 1... 2... 3!"

But I never moved an inch. Mr Lim came by; he joined Ms Bong and together they shouted "1 ... 2 ... 3!" as I stepped on it half-way. I felt the steps shaking. I falsely accused Hakim for shaking it but it was my leg that shook violently and I cried! To cut the story, I finally made it alive. Phew! Luckily that's over. Unfortunately, I was made the courageous cadet along with Raihan and Edmund. The mountain climbing was very hard. I felt dizzy and wanted to vomit because of all the steep slopes plus the climbing! I fell down a lot and the hardest part was the ropes and ladders. Mr Lim had to climb up with me, guided me and told me which foot went first. Fortunately, we made it to the top but I wasn't there to hold the NCDCC flag . *sniff sniff* To end the expedition , we went shopping and sight-seeing. I bought some souvenirs for my family & a hand-puppet for myself. It was an amazing expedition of my life!

On the first day we went to school around 7.30am. My friend picked me up and went to school together. We assembled around 8.30am. Mr Aidil gave us our T-shirts and whistles Around 9, we left school for Changi Airport. We checked in our bags and went for breakfast. After breakfast we said farewell to our parents and reached Sarawak at around 3 and took a bus to Camp Permai. The journey took around an hour, and everybody slept in the bus. We reached Camp Permai rainforest around 3.30pm. Our teachers divided us into groups and gave us our cabin number and keys. After that we had a briefing in one of the halls and then to our bunk then at 6.30pm we went to the cafe for our dinner. After dinner, we had some free time which meant we could go back to our cabin and sleep. But we couldn’t sleep so we had a talk and got to know Kartina and Jelina more closer. Both were friendly and talked with them till around 10pm when everyone went to sleep. On the second day after breakfast we are divided into groups to do obstacle course. In this course we needed to have teamwork and co-operate with each other. After lunch my group was told to do the high ropes. Everyone including myself was scared but we still had to do it. After the high ropes course, we went to our cabin to wash up then went for dinner. After dinner we had our briefing about the next day’s trekking. After that we went back to our cabin to sleep

The next day, we woke at 6am in the morning. After bathing, we went for our breakfast at the cafe and after got ready for our trekking. We started trekking around 8.30am and we ended up at around 5pm. After that we went straight to our resort and washed up, then went for dinner and went back to the cabin to sleep.

On day four, we woke at 6am again, and later went for the low ropes course. After that, we had lunch, then went shopping! We shopped until 8.30pm. On the last day in Sarawak, we had breakfast then said goodbye to the resort and instructors. After that, we took a flight back to Singapore. Lastly I want to congratulate Surya Binte Abdul Rahman , Muhd Raihan Bin Razali, Edmund Teo and Muhd Hakim Bin Duraimi for winning the Award of Confidence and Best Cadet award.

Day 1

We first arrived at school at 8:30am and I saw most cadets with heavy looking bags. As our teacher-in-charge called us to report in, my heart was trembling; exciting things were going to happen! The teachers gave us our immigration white cards, whistles for hiking and wristbands for identification.

As we were ready, we set off to Changi Airport. It took us about an hour and we arrived at Terminal 2. As I first entered to the airport, it was so huge. This was the first time I have been to an airport.

Instruction was given by our teachers on how to check-in our bags. After we checked in our bags, we had our lunch. As I checked in my wallet, I could only spend my money in Malaysia as I only had Malaysia Ringgit. My kind angel Raihan helped me to pay some money for my lunch. I was really blessed to have cadets like him.

Our lunch took only an hour. After our lunch, we set off. We went to the immigration customs. It was the first time I used the electronic Biopass Passport. It was so simple and I’ve didn’t have to queue for a long time. After we cleared customs, we waited at our Gate as it was not yet open..

Suddenly, many began to cry. Mostly, they were scared, as it was their first flight experienced. To me, I’m excited but worried if anything happens on the way. The Gate opened and we boarded the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 737. On the Internet, the airplane looked small but it looked huge in real life!

We entered and prepared to fly off. The stewardess showed us the use of seatbelts, emergency procedures, and the use of life jacket. Then, we took off. My heart trembled. We looked shocked to see the true view of Singapore; what a small little island we had. Cars looked like ants and building looked like block-toys. Everything we saw became smaller and smaller.

Lunch was served. It was so delicious. Soon, we landed. The flight took us only 1hr 25Mins. The landing wasn’t that exciting as the sky looked dark. It was a bumpy ride as we landed with the extreme. We exited and headed to clear customs. Once cleared, we took our bags. I switched on my cell phone and contacted my parents that I reached here safely.

We soon take off to Camp Permai. The city was really small but it was interesting and there were wonderful vehicles, statues, and buildings. It took us another one hour of travelling time. As we arrived, we were split up into our roommates group. We took our keys immediately and head into our cabins.  Our teacher instructed us to meet at the Restaurant Café for our dinner.

The dinner was delicious. It was a buffet and it was very interesting as we ate facing the South-China Sea, with the sound of the waves, and the beautiful sunset. Once we were done with our dinner, we went back to our cabins for a good night sleep.

Day 2

The sun began to rise at 6am. At 7am, we had our morning breakfast. It was extremely delicious. Then, we headed for our first activity. It was high rope activity. We were firstly introduced to our instructors and he explained the safety procedures. Once done, we headed to our starting position. When it was our turn, I was scared. But it all ended with a very high flying fox. It was very fast and windy.  Once done, we had lunch.

After lunch, we set off to obstacle activity. It was a fun activity. The instruction was simple we had to the stick (called the king) to bring over to every obstacle Such as crawling, jumping and many more. Once we were done, we head back to our cabins and wash up. As the sun sets, it was our dinnertime.

After dinner, we had a briefing for hiking trip to Mount Santubong. We were introduced to their culture of the Dayaks (Tribal People) and the dos and don’ts for our Mountain Trekking. After the briefing, we head back and had a good night’s sleep.

Day 3

It was our trekking day. We had a heavy breakfast and then we set off. The instructors brought us to our starting point in a vehicle. As we arrived to our starting point, we did a morning warm-up exercise. Without doing the warm-up exercise, we’d be having cramps during the expedition.

After we did our warm-up exercise, we set off. We began our trip at 0837 Hrs. We climbed, walked, crawled. As we first stoped at ‘half-way journey’ to checkpoint one, we began to see the beautiful scenery of Sarawak. We carried on to checkpoint one. We had to climb up with rocks, ropes and unexpected tree branches/roots. We carried on to our next checkpoint. It was beginning to get tough. The ladder ropes took us 30 minutes for everyone to go up.

Once done, we carried to our last checkpoint before the summit. It was much worse than what we had been through previously. All did their best and managed to reach the third checkpoint. As everyone got up, we immediately split up. It was due to the bad weather. The sky began to get foggy. Some had to stay behind to prevent them from getting injuries as going downwards wasn’t going to be that easy.

The ones who were left behind, had their lunches and then set off. We carried on. It became worse as the ground began to be more slippery. We climbed up through the rope ladders and managed to reach the summit. We took a group photo. We are unable to take pictures of the beautiful city of Sarawak due to bad weather.

We ate our lunch and set off back to the starting point. We arrived at the summit at 1252 Hrs. The weather became worse. Light rain began to pour down. The journey downwards was tougher especially we are having bad weather. In the end, it all ended at 1833Hrs and we headed back to our campsite.

We had a group debrief. We headed back to the cabins for a good long bath and after then went back to the Restaurant Café for dinner. It all ended with a good, comfortable, long sleep.

Day 4

We woke up later this morning and saw another group from Chua Chu Kang Secondary School. We came to eat breakfast together with other schools. We asked them what the activity was for the day. They replied that it was their hiking day today for them. I was shocked that they look unprepared but we wished them good luck for their trip.

Sooner or later, we had our city excursion trip. The tourist bus took us to the nearest city from the campsite, Kuching. In Malay, Kuching means cat. With that, we get to see many statues of cats.

We stop by to one of the best tourist attractions in the Kuching city. The building (picture below) was used by the Malaysia government.

After sightseeing, we went to first-stop of shopping. There was a lot of beautiful stuff. Most are used today by Dayaks in Sarawak. We were all attracted to this cat.

Once done shopping, we walked to another shopping mall. It was called ‘Sarawak Plaza’ shopping mall. Most of the products were quite expensive. But I came across this collectable it was very wonderful.

Then, we carried on to another shopping mall. ‘The Spring’. It was one of the biggest shopping malls in Sarawak and received the most tourists. But one thing was that the shopping was big but it was a tiring experience as the shopping mall looked almost like Jurong Point Shopping centre. It was a confusing experience.

In the end, we had dinner at the same shopping mall. It has the best food we ever tasted. It was Keaw Tiau Chicken Noodle. It was so delicious that I ate two bowls of the same dish. It didn’t look attractive but it was very delicious.

Finally, we went back to the campsite. We had our last briefing regarding the rules and regulation of Singapore Customs and were told what we were not supposed to bring back home. With that, we packed up and had our last night’s sleep.

Day 5

It was our last day before we headed back home. But before that, we had our favorite last breakfast. Many of us took our last pictures of the beautiful scenery of the beach.

After breakfast, it was a prize presentation. Many cried and smiled. It all ended in crying as we were going miss this place as it was the best experience trip of our lifetime.

We headed back to our bus back to Kuching International Airport and after clearing immigration waited for our boarding. There was catered food and we boarded the plane. Soon, we landed safely back in Singapore

Kayaking Expedition - 14/02/09

On 14 February 2009, 3 of our selected Sec2 cadets; LCP Muhd Raihan, LCP Nur Afiah and LCP Imroatu Soleha went for the 8th Kayaking Expedition and they shared their learning experiences such as the difficulties they faced, knowing new friends from different units and many more. So come on and read on their life experiences after attending around 8 hours of expedition.

Posted by LCP Muhd Raihan

I felt very happy to attend this Kayaking Expedition. At first, I thought the expedition was hard and I could not manage it. But infact, my predictions was wrong. This expedition has taught me lots of things such as teamwork and communication as without these; we could not go far and reached to the destination that we want. Overall, this was a great experience for me=D

My experience to Kayaking Expedition was fun and interesting. The funniest part was I and Imroatu was paddling and suddenly our kayak was turning to the other direction. When we reached East Coast Park, we had our games 1st while waiting for our lunch. The food was delicious and this expedition has actually helped me to get to know more people from other units and spending our time together.

My experience going to the Kayaking Expedition was fun but tiring. The most funny part was I and Afiah was kayaking suddenly our kayak was going to the different direction which we should not go.Haha!!I still remember that I need to paddle by myself because Afiah had sea-sick and both of my hand was cramp. When we reached our destination at East Coast Park, I felt dizzy and had a rest for a while whereas the rest of my NCDCC friends played a game that was organized by our CLTs. We than had lunch and I found out that the food was delicious. After having our lunch, we have our “spring cleaning” before we proceed back to Camelot. The sadness thing was that Afiah conditions getting worst and 1 of the CLT’s comforted her while waiting for the safety boat to come and help her. On our way back, Raihan felt dizzy and decided to exchange with me as I was okay with it. It was my 1st time working together with Major Howard when I actually need to partner with him for kayaking. We paddle our way back with instructions given from him. At last we reached Camelot and we had our kayak wash and placed it back to its place before we went for our bath. I was quite shocked as I found out that my skin has turn darker and when I reached home, my parents starts laughing at me and this is a New Experience for me.

YISS Unit Appreciation Nite=)

Posted by CLT Nur Lina

On the 16th December, our unit have a BBQ from 4.30 till 8.30pm. This BBQ was actually to celebrate our 1 year service in YISS NCDCC.

Before we start off our BBQ, Me, Hakim, Ahmad Syafiq and Immroatu went to Bedok Wholesale BBQ to collect the foods and things needed for the BBQ. It took us around 1hr+ to get there and then came back to school.

Upon reaching, I noticed that some of the Sec1 has already reached school. So the girls help to prepare the food such as cutting fruits. Whereas some of the guys, went to West Mall NTUC to get some more food seems we find that it is not sufficient for us.

At around 4.30pm, we set up the BBQ place. Ms Bong our OC , Syazwani and me trying our best to start off the fire. It took us 45minutes to get it done and to check whether they can start the BBQ, Ms Bong put our “trial” food and indeed it was a SUCCESSFUL one. While busy with the starting off the fire, the Sec2s and 3s were having a “mini- warm up” game for the Sec1 before they get to eat the food. It was then MAKAN time and everyone was shelping one another to cook the food and not to forget they also cook for our OC. GOOD job SeC1!!

Back to game time. The Sec2 was in-charge for the wet activity. As everyone was to bring extra clothing, they were playing with a pail of water and starts splashing one another. Actually I did not know what was the game about as I was busy helping them to clear some of the food. And through that, I get AWARD from them. Charcoal on my FACE & A PAIL OF WATER COOLER=) As they always say “All for 1, 1 for All”, everyone get WET except our OC.

After having much FUN with water, we play a game that taught them something. From here, I could say that my Sec1 have actually changed. They could get the meaning of the game that was conducted by me and our invited guest CLT Huda. It surprised me as each and everyone of them actually contribute their ideas to it. I’m SERIOUSLY HAPPY AND PROUD OF U ALL.
Lastly as usual, we took a group photo as a MEMORY for our service and commitment in YISS NCDCC.

Not to forget, thanks to our SEC2 which is LCP Bao Ru, Hakim and Lavanya for your plans and make this Appreciation Nite BBQ a SUCCESSFUL ONE!

Once again Thank You=)
